PM assurance: Won't do anything in haste on Telangana issue

New Delhi: In an SOS call, Andhra MPs met the Prime Minister on Friday afternoon. They told him they cannot go to the regions that voted for them without a statement from the government that clearly indicates what happens next for Telangana.

The MPs pointed out that there is still no consensus on the issue, and that the Centre must review its decision to sanction a Telangana state.

The Prime Minister assured them that nothing will be done in haste.

A rattled Congress is now staring at the resignation of more than a hundred Andhra MLAs who are unhappy with the idea of a Telangana state. The government sanctioned this on Wednesday night in a move that surprised even hard-core pro-Telangana groups.

Top leaders of the Congress, including Sonia Gandhi, are trying to pacify the MPs and MLAs from the non-Telangana areas of coastal Andhra, and Rayalaseema.

But the MLAs who have resigned say they will not change their minds unless the decision is reversed.
