New Delhi:

The Monsoon Session of the Parliament began on a stormy note this morning, with the Opposition, spearheaded by the Congress, trying to corner the government over the ghastly Pahalgam terror attack.

Here are the top 10 points from this big story:

  1. Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were first adjourned till 12 pm amid chaos in both the Houses, with the Congress aggressively pushing for a discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and US President Donald Trump's claims that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in the Pahalgam aftermath.

  2. In the Lower House, Opposition MPs raised slogans during the Question Hour, demanding a debate on the Pahalgam attack. This disrupted the discussions, with Speaker Om Birla declaring adjournment till 12 pm. It was adjourned again, till 2 pm, within minutes of resumption after noon.

  3. In the Upper House, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said that Trump's ceasefire claims were an insult to the country. Countering him, BJP chief JP Nadda said accused the Congress of deflecting from key issues.

  4. Earlier in the day, the Congress had submitted Suspension of Business notices ahead of the Session, to deliberate on the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar.

  5. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself raked up the Pahalgam issue in his address ahead of the Monsoon Session today and praised the role of the Indian military during Operation Sindoor and that of the MPs who carried India's message to the world in the weeks that followed.

  6. During the Monsoon Session, the Congress will also seek discussion on the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, Schedule VI status for Ladakh, and the situation in Manipur.

  7. At the all-party meeting, attended by representatives from 51 political parties, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju appealed for cooperation to ensure smooth functioning of parliament. Rajya Sabha chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has also called for cooperation among political parties and highlighted the need for mutual respect.

  8. The government has a packed schedule, with multiple bills listed for discussion and passage during the Monsoon Session. Eight new bills will be introduced during this Session and eight pending bills will also be taken up for discussion.

  9. The key bills will include the Income-Tax Bill, introduced during the Budget Session in February. The bill and its amendments, adopted by the select committee, will be sent for passage after cabinet approval. Another key bill that would be taken up is the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, which seeks to promote ease of doing business and improve regulatory compliance.

  10. The Monsoon Session will continue till August 21, with a break from August 12 to August 18. There will be 21 sittings across 32 days.
