Jammu's Taniya will sing for Guangzhou

Jammu: In eight days, Taniya Gupta will be seen by millions around the world as she brings the best of Bollywood to the closing ceremony of the Asiad Games in China.

The 28-year-old will perform many Bollywood songs including Jai Ho and her favourite, Zindagi Kaisi Yeh Paheli from the movie Anand.

Taniya was selected by a committee which short-listed her based on the work she had submitted to the jury and her curriculum vitae.

What makes her especially proud is that the Chinese government has given her a regular visa - instead of the contentious stapled one that it issues to people from Jammu & Kashmir, indicating that the traveller is a person from an area accepted as disputed territory by China.

"Now with me as a Jammuite representing my country there, it clarifies that I am part of India. And I am representing not only India, but my state also," she says.

Taniya studied medicine in college, but finds nothing as fulfilling as her music.  She has trained under Amjad Ali Khan and Suresh Wadekar.
