Tata Group and OpenAI on Thursday announced a strategic partnership anchored by plans to build 100 megawatts (MW) of AI infrastructure in India, scalable to 1 gigawatt (GW), alongside joint initiatives to accelerate enterprise AI adoption, develop industry-specific solutions and expand AI skilling for Indian youth.

As part of a multi-year agreement, Tata Consultancy Services' HyperVault unit will develop AI-ready, green-energy-powered infrastructure designed to support next-generation AI workloads.

The facility will feature purpose-built, liquid-cooled data centres with high rack densities and connectivity across key cloud regions, positioning India as a global AI hub.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Thursday said that he is "struck by the pace of change" in India and praised the country's growing role in the global AI ecosystem.

He recalled how his father, Regunatha Pichai, said that he would be "more impressed" if driverless cars worked on "busy" Indian roads.

At the India AI Impact Summit 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "... We have to have a big vision and shoulder an equally big responsibility. Therefore, the real question today is not what Artificial Intelligence can do in the future. The question is, what do we do with Artificial Intelligence in the present? Such questions have come before humanity before. The most powerful example is nuclear power. We have seen its destruction and its positive contribution has also been seen..."

"AI is making machines intelligent, but more than that, it is increasing human capabilities manyfold. There is only one difference: this time the speed is unprecedented and the scale is also unexpected. Earlier, the impact of technology used to take decades to be visible. "One year ago in Paris, we announced $109 billion in AI investments, and we are delivering this project with a lot of data centers, 58 billion euro in 2025 powered by our decarbonated nuclear energy. With a great assets, and this is very important indeed to have low carbon and available energy. Last year, France exported 90 terawatt hour of low carbon energy and pilotable energy, which is a huge opportunity to build faster and bigger data center."

Talking about what India has built, French President Emmanuel Macron said, "A payment system that now processes 20 billion transactions every month . A health infrastructure that has issued 500 million digital health IDs. Here are the results. They call it the India Stack Open Interoperable Sovereign. That is what this summit is about."

"India built what no other country can," said French President Emmanuel Macron lauding India's digital journey. Sharing a story of growth and transformation, Macron said, "10 years ago, a street vendor in Mumbai could not open a bank account. No address, no papers, no access. And, today, the same vendor accepts payments on his phone for free, from anyone in the country. That is not just a tech story. That is civilisation story. India built something that no other country in the world has built - a digital identity for 1.4 billion people," he added.

"AI must be accessible to everyone," said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. "That is why, encouraged by the General Assembly of the United Nations, I'm calling for a global fund on AI to build basic capacity in developing countries. Skills, data, affordable computing power and inclusive ecosystems. Our target is $3 billion US dollars. That is less than 1% of the annual revenue of a single tech company. A small price for AI defusion that benefits all, including businesses building AI," he added.

"No matter how bold we are or how responsible, we won't realise AI's full benefits, unless we work together. Bill Gates will not deliver the keynote address at the India AI Impact Summit today, his philanthropic organisation, the Gates Foundation, said this morning, amid a row over the Microsoft co-founder's name appearing in the Epstein files.

The Gates Foundation will be represented by Ankur Vora, president of the Africa and India offices, who will speak later today at the summit in New Delhi, the organisation said.

"After careful consideration, and to ensure the focus remains on the AI Summit's key priorities, Mr Gates will not be delivering his keynote address," the Gates Foundation said in a post on X.

The Gates Foundation remains fully committed to our work in India to advance our shared health and development goals, it said.

The theme of the six-day summit, which began on February 16, is "Sarvajan Hitaya, Sarvajan Sukhaya", which means "welfare for all, happiness of all". It is the fourth annual international gathering focused on AI, following previous meetings in the UK in 2023, South Korea in 2024, and France in 2025.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Google DeepMind head Demis Hassabis, Adobe's Shantanu Narayen and Wipro executive chairman Rishad Premji are among those scheduled to speak at the summit.

Prime Minister will participate in the CEO roundtable from 5:30 pm onwards. It will convene senior executives from global technology and industry firms with government leadership to discuss investment, research collaboration, supply chains, and deployment of AI systems.

Prime Minister will participate in the Leaders' Plenary which will take place around 12 noon onwards. It will bring together Heads of State, ministers, and senior representatives from multilateral institutions to outline national and global priorities on AI, including governance, infrastructure, and international cooperation.

Prime Minister will participate in the opening ceremony of the India AI Impact Summit 2026 at around 940 am. Along with the PM, the opening ceremony will also be addressed by the President of France Emmanuel Macron, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as well as various top industry leaders from across the world.
This will be followed by a visit to the India AI Impact Expo 2026 along with other leaders at around 11 AM, where they will visit various country pavilions.
