How NRI lost the battle against swine flu

Ahmedabad:

Four people have died of swine flu in India till now. Three of them in the last 24 hours in Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad, in the latest case, a non-resident Indian Pravin Patel has died of the flu in Ahmedabad.

The 43-year-old NRI and his wife came to Ahmedabad on July 31 from Atlanta in the US. He was checked by doctors and had no symptoms of flu at that time.

Patel and his wife developed complications two days after arriving but thought it was normal fever.

On August 5, their condition worsened and they went to a private hospital. He was kept under observation, put on medicines and blood samples were taken for H1N1 testing.

Two days later, on August 7, he was shifted to the government civil hospital when the H1N1 test came positive.

But Praveen's hemoglobin levels had gone down considerably by then, making doctors suspect that he had some pneumonic problems as well.

Doctors say Praveen was about five days late in coming to hospital for a swine flu test. By the time the H1N1 test results came positive it may be have been too late.
