The Ministry of Home affairs has asked has asked all states, union territories and probe agencies to update their list of wanted fugitives every three months and inform the Centre about it.
In an advisory, the Home Ministry also asked the states, union territories and investigating agencies to inform it immediately if anyone on the wanted list is arrested and ensure that the name is deleted from the list.
"This is the first step that we have taken. Some more actions will be taken to ensure that the list of wanted persons is error-free," a Home Ministry official said.
The action comes in the wake of two people, Feroz Ahmad Rashid Khan and Wazhul Kamar Khan, found on the list of '50 most wanted' and handed over to Pakistan, who have been living in Mumbai--one in Thane and the other in a jail of the metropolis.
Three other men on CBI's most wanted list are also out of date.
Mohammed Abdul Shahed, aka Shahed Bilal, a dead HuJI (Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami) leader was killed in Pakistan while Shaikh Abdul Khaja alias Mohammed Amjad, believed to be Bilal's second-in-command is lodged in a jail in Hyderabad.
Rajkumar Meghen, the Chairman of Manipuri Militant outfit, the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) is in the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) ever since he was arrested in Bangladesh, in October, 2010.
Bilal, Amjad and Meghen appear in the list of most wanted fugitives on the CBI's website.
Officials said the list, which was handed over to Pakistan, was prepared by the CBI, Intelligence Bureau (IB), NIA and other wings of the government.
"There were three rounds of meetings among the officials of these organisations and due diligence were done before finalising the list to be handed over to Pakistan. Unfortunately, the error had happened and now we are trying our best to ensure a foolproof mechanism," an official said.
