BJP in Rajasthan Hopes its Run Rate Will Be Rewarded on Sunday

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje

Jaipur: When the Prime Minister expands his cabinet on Sunday, Rajasthan hopes for good news.

So far, the council of ministers has just one representative from Rajasthan, a state which the BJP swept in the national election. Nihal Chand Meghwal, a young MP from Rajasthan, was included in the council of 44 ministers, but he has since been fighting accusations of rape. After he was ordered by a Jaipur court to appear in person on Wednesday, speculation has been picking up about whether he will be asked to quit.

Within the BJP in Rajasthan, the sentiment is that despite its unbeatable run rate - it won all 25 parliamentary seats - the state was not given due recognition in the council of ministers.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has reportedly made it clear to the party's top leaders that she is disappointed that her son, 41-year-old Dushyant Singh, who is serving a third term as parliamentarian, was not made a junior minister.

The PM has repeatedly stressed that his government and party must not be seen as encouraging nepotism or promoting dynasties.

Among the young hopefuls from Rajasthan is Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, a first-time MP from Jodhpur who defeated former royal Chandresh Kumari. Olympic Silver medalist Rajyawardhan Rathore is another hot contendor though today he officially denied receiving an invitation to the PM's tea on Sunday ahead of the oath-taking ceremony for his ministers.

And among Rajasthan's veterans is Sanwar Lal Jat, a prominent Jat leader from Ajmer, who has  according to sources been invited to be in Delhi on Sunday.

According to sources, Rajasthan will see more leaders in the council of ministers; within the BJP in the state, many feel that will also end talk of a chasm between Chief Minister Raje and the party's senior-most leaders in Delhi.
