Bodo Turf Prone To Sway Despite BPF's Recent Local Polls Win

Despite the Bodoland People's Front's (BPF) recent landslide win in the Bodoland Territorial Council polls, the political landscape in this western Assam belt appears fluid. The NDA seeks to leverage its tie-up with the Bodoland People's Front across 15 seats.

In a significant realignment, the BJP parted ways with its former ally UPPL and re-inducted the BPF into the NDA fold after the latter's emphatic victory in the Bodoland Territorial Council polls in October last year.

The Hagrama Mohilary-led BPF, a dominant force in BTC politics since 2005 barring a single stint out of power in 2020, has remained a key ally in successive state governments, irrespective of whether the Congress or the BJP was at the helm in Dispur.

Gen Z Pitted Against BJP Veteran In Guwahati Central

AJP debutante Kunki Chowdhury, whose parents faced a possible legal threat from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over alleged beef consumption, challenged veteran BJP leader Vijay Kumar Gupta in Guwahati Central constituency.

When the opposition Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) announced the 27-year-old unknown Chowdhury's candidature, who was slowely but surely accepted by the people. It looked like a cakewalk for 70-year-old veteran BJP leader Gupta, given the ruling party's massive election engineering machine.

As a young leader, Chowdhury brings fresh perspectives and energy to the table, leveraging her academic background to drive positive change.

Dignified Campaign, Cut-throat Competition In Jorhat

The campaign remained dignified in Assam's Jorhat assembly constituency where state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and veteran sitting BJP MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami were engaged in a direct contest.

Gogoi said he is like Mahabharata's 'Arjun' while Goswami is 'Bhishma' and he has the single-minded goal of removing the "corrupt" BJP government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Goswami politely countered the Jorhat MP's assertions with, "he is our MP, people have elected him...he is a good orator, and I do not want to say anything against him."

Jorhat, with a colonial legacy, is considered the second most important town of the state after Guwahati and has a diverse electorate of caste Assamese Hindus, Ahoms, tea garden workers, Mising tribes, indigenous Assamese Muslims, among others.
