US dance troupe turns Golconda fort into a dance floor

Hyderabad: This afternoon, the Golconda Fort in Hyderabad will come alive with 15 dancers who will perform on the ramparts of the fort. This American dance form will use the occasion to focus attention on the rock formations in and around Hyderabad, which are fast getting cut.

The Bandaloop dance company from the US, that has made a name for itself by dancing amidst natural cliffs, skyscrapers and bridges, will do a first by performing at a historic fort, the Golconda Fort in Hyderabad.

The group that is named after a fictitious band of gypsies living in the Himalayas, will use no props at the Fort and instead use the texture of the heritage site to make an impact.

"Instead of dancing in theaters, we dance in nature, in urban settings, on surfaces that are both vertical and horizontal. Golconda Fort is particularly exciting environment for us to perform in because it is both a natural setting and an architectural fort,'' said Rachael Lincoln, Assistant Director, Bandaloop

Hyderabad's Save Rocks Society feels this effort will help focus attention on saving the rocky terrain in and around the city.

"We are building up everything, every single little inch of our city and we don't leave recreation spaces. And these rocky hills are the ideal infrastructure for recreation,'' said Frauke Quader, Secretary, Society to Save Rocks

The 20-year-old group that hopes to engage the imagination of Hyderabadis, has performed its aerial choreography in 12 countries so far.
