World Sight Day (WSD) is an annual day of awareness held on the second Thursday of October, to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment. This year the World Eye Sight Day is being celebrated today, that is 12th October 2017. The 'Call to Action' for World Sight Day this year is 'Make Vision Count'. Inarguably one of the most important organs of sense are our pair of eyes. We perceive up to 80 per cent of all impressions by means of our sight. When other senses like taste and smell stop functioning, it is the eyes that alert us from danger around. Our diet plays an integral part in maintaining a healthy body which included our eyes too. To maintain good eye health, it is imperative to switch to healthy foods that you must add in your daily diet. According to Delhi-based Nutritionist Lokendra Tomar, "There are certain nutrients which are required for good vision. Some of them may include Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Beta-carotene, vitamin A, zinc, vitamin C, Vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acid, etc."

Here are some food that may help boost your eyesight and eye health.

1.Carrot

Carrot due to the presence of beta-carotene- a type of vitamin A that helps the retina and other parts of the eye to function properly makes for one of the best vegetables to improve eyesight.

2.Okra

In addition to having good amounts of beta-carotene, it contains zeaxanthin and lutein. These compounds are essential for maintaining good vision. It is loaded with vitamin C that helps in maintaining eye health.

3.Apricots

According to the Book Healing Foods by DK Publishing, its high beta-carotene content is beneficial for ageing eyes. Studies also show a regular intake of nutrients such as vitamin C and E, zinc and copper- all found in apricots - can reduce the risk of macular degeneration by 25 percent.

4.Broccoli

It has a useful amount of lutein, an antioxidant that promotes eye health. The fiber rich vegetable also contains vitamin C and beta-carotene along with lutein and zeaxanthin. Toss this vegetable in your salads, sauces or pasta dishes.

5.Nuts

The Omega 3 found in nuts like almonds, walnuts and cashews are the fatty acids that help keep your retinas healthy and stop age-related eyesight deterioration.

Load up on these foods to ensure a better eyesight. While you are at it also make certain tweaks in your day to day habits which could be taking a toll on your eyesight. Don't stare at gadgets for too long. Lower the brightness level of your computer screen and phone as it reduces strain.Keep your eyes hydrated. Do relaxation exercises whenever you find time. Place your hands together palm to palm and rub them together briskly creating heat. Place them over your eyes and imagine a relaxing place.
