About Barasat

West Bengal's Barasat constituency will go to the polls on May 19 during the seventh phase of the 17th Lok Sabha election. The constituency consists of Habra, Ashoknagar, Barasat, Deganga, Rajarhat New Town, Bidhannagar and Madhyamgram segments. This time Trinamool Congress (TMC) party had fielded Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, the sitting MP, as its candidate. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar is the President of the West Bengal Mahila Congress.

Since 2009, TMC candidate Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has been representing the constituency. She had garnered 5,25,387 votes while All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) contender Murtaza Hussain had received 3,52,246 votes. This time AIFB contender Haripada Biswas will contest from the constituency. BJP candidate Dr. Mrinal Kanti Debnath is contesting from the Barasat seat.

In the 2014 general election, TMC party had received 41.39% votes while the Congress candidate Riju Ghoshal garnered 3.2% votes. BJP and AIFB had received 23.37% and 27.75% votes, respectively.

The Barasat seat was won by the Congress in the elections held from 1957 to 1962. Arun Chandra had represented the constituency during this period. During 1967-1971 CPI's Ranendra Nath and 1977-1980 AIFB's Chitta Basu had won the seat. Mr Basu was re-elected to the constituency in 1989, 1991 and 1996. In 1998-1999 TMC's Ranjit Kumar Panja and in 2004, AIFB's Subrata Bose had won the seat.
