Maheshpur constituency is one of the 81 Vidhan Sabha constituencies in Jharkhand. It comes under the Rajmahal Lok Sabha constituency. The Maheshpur constituency voted on December 20 - the last phase of Assembly election - along with Borio, Barhait, Litipara, Pakaur, Rajmahal, Sikaripara, Dumka, Jama, Jarmundi, Nala, Jamtara, Sarath, Poreyahat, Godda and Mahagama constituencies.
The Maheshpur Vidhan Sabha seat is reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category. It has been a stronghold of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
The party has represented the constituency in the legislative assembly twice - in 2005 and 2014. In the 2014 election, Stephen Marandi had won the Maheshpur seat with a JMM ticket. He defeated BJP candidate Devidhan Tudu by a margin of 6,156 votes.
A total of 1,58,304 votes were registered in the constituency in the last election out of which 2,535 were registered under NOTA.
In 2005, JMM's Suphal Marandi had won the seat defeating BJP's Debidhan Besra.
