About Chandigarh

Constituted in 1966, the union territory of Chandigarh is the capital of two neighbouring states - Punjab and Haryana. The city is a Lok Sabha parliamentary constituency and total number of electorates in the Chandigarh Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 1). It is not entitled to any state-level election.

The country's first planned city has a population of 10, 55,450 people, according to the 2011 Census of India. It is internationally known for its architecture and urban design.

Chandigarh has a high population density of 7,900 persons per square kilometre. The total number of males constitutes 55 per cent and females 45 per cent of the massive population of the city.

The total number of voters in Lok Sabha elections held in 2009 was 5, 25,437.

The current sitting member of parliament of the Chandigarh constituency is Bharatiya Janta Party's Kirron Kher. Ms Kher won the seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections with 1, 91,362 votes. The party has re-nominated her from the same seat for the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections.

The voter turnout in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections was 73.71%.

India is voting for the Lok Sabha Election 2019 in seven phases that started on April 11 and will end on May 19. The results of the general election 2019 will be announced on May 23.
