BJP's Giriraj Singh remains defiant, #ModiSendMeToPak trends

Giriraj Singh's controversial comment has inspired humour on Twitter

New Delhi: BJP leader Giriraj Singh, who controversially said "Narendra Modi's critics should go to Pakistan", is now a rage on social media.

Mr Singh, a BJP candidate in Bihar, remains defiant after commenting on Saturday, "Those who want to stop Narendra Modi (from becoming prime minister) are looking towards Pakistan. In the coming days, they will have no place in India. They will only have place in Pakistan."

Responding to the Bihar police's FIR or First Information Report against him, the BJP leader said today, "I have said nothing wrong. I have not insulted Muslims; I am talking about those people who are Pakistan supporters."

His original comment has gone viral on the web. The #ModiSendMeToPak hashtag is trending on Twitter and even senior BJP leader LK Advani has been dragged into an array of jokes inspired by the provocative speech.

Mr Advani, whose differences with Mr Modi have dogged the BJP for nearly a year, was depicted as saying "Been there, done that" in response to Mr Singh's "Anti-Modi? Go to Pakistan".

A travel site also started trending, with tweets talking about "limited offers" for those planning trips to Pakistan.

"I would love2 go2 Pakistan but my local Passport office is taking way 2 much time2 deliver my passport," tweeted Priya Dave.

"I heard Kababs r amazing there," commented Shivam Vij.

"NaMo wants all to learn abt glorious Indian history and civlzn; will send us to see Harappa-Mohenjodaro on becoming PM," tweeted Atishi Marlena.

The BJP leader's comments, made in the presence of former BJP president Nitin Gadkari, have kicked up a political storm in the middle of a bitterly fought national election that has seen hate speeches and personal attacks.

"Will they send all the parties that do not come under NDA to Pakistan? I think 90% of the people will have to be sent to Pakistan, as they won't vote for Modi," said Congress spokesperson Meem Afzal. "Election Commission should take this into account and send him to jail."
