About Vijayawada

Vijayawada is one of the 25 parliamentary constituencies in Andhra Pradesh. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, Kesineni Srinivas of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was elected from here with 5,92,953 votes. His closest opponent was the YSR Congress' Koneru Rajendra Prasad, who managed 5,18,239 votes.

Vijayawada has historically been a Congress stronghold. In 1957, Dr Komarraju Atchamamba of the Congress was elected to parliament from this seat. Afterwards, KL Rao -- also from the Congress -- was elected to parliament from Vijayawada in 1962, 1967 and 1971. Party candidate Godey Murahari was elected in 1977, followed by Chennupati Vidya in 1980.

In 1984, Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao of the TDP was elected from Vijayawada. In 1989, Chennupati Vidya was elected to parliament on a Congress ticket. Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao emerged victorious again in 1991.

In the 1996 and 1998 elections, Congress candidate Parvathaneni Upendra merged victorious. In 1999, Gadde Ramamohan was elected on a TDP ticket.

In the 2004 and 2009 elections, Rajagopal Lagadapati was elected on a Congress ticket.

There are seven assembly sections in the Vijayawada Lok Sabha constituency. These are Tiruvuru, Vijayawada West, Vijayawada Central, Vijayawada East, Mylavaram, Nandigama and Jaggayapeta.

Vijayawada voted during the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections, on April 11. While Kesineni Srinivas is again contesting on a TDP ticket, the BJP and the Congress have fielded Kilaru Dileep and Naraharisetty Narasimharao respectively.
