Sheila Dikshit pays tribute to martyrs of Hardinge bomb case

New Delhi: Delhi's Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit paid tribute to the martyrs of the historic Hardinge bomb case and encouraged people to imbibe the spirit of patriotism from their sacrifice.

Freedom fighters Bhai Bal Mukund, Master Amir Chand and Master Awadh Behari were executed on May 8, 1915, for hurling a bomb at a procession of the then Governor-General of India Lord Hardinge in Chandni Chowk on December 23, 1912.

Amir Chand, Bal Mukund and Awadh Behari were executed at the Old Delhi Jail, while another freedom fighter Basant Kumar Biswas was hanged on May 9 at the Ambala Central Jail.

Paying homage to the martyrs at their memorial in Maulana Azad Medical College, which earlier used to be the Old Delhi Jail, Mrs Dikshit appealed to the people to imbibe spirit of patriotism from the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters.

In memory of these martyrs a memorial was built at the site of 'Phansi Ghar' (Site where convicts are hanged) on the Maulana Azad Medical College campus.

The freedom fighters had protested the entry of the Governor-General of India into the new Indian capital Delhi. Lord Hardinge was injured in the incident.
