Dastkari Haat Craft Bazaar To Mark 60 Years Of Indo-Iran Cultural Ties

Works of 9 Iranian artistes will be showcased to revive old civilisational and creative links.

New Delhi: New Delhi is scheduled to witness a colorful melange of handlooms, textile and pottery at the upcoming Dastkari Haat Craft Bazaar.

The annual festival begins on the 1st of January and will be marking 60 years of Indo-Iran cultural ties.

The Dastkari Haat Samiti will be showcasing works of nine Iranian craftspersons and artistes to revive the old civilisational and creative links between the two countries.

Iranian pottery pieces, metal works in a variety of accessories and ornaments, decorative interiors and exteriors, along with exotic carpets will serve as the highlight of the event.

The fortnight-long crafts bazaar will also focus on the rich traditions of India, with a focus on popular art, crafts and textiles.

Titled, 'Namayeshgahsanaye-E-Dasti Iranva Hind' the interactions which commence on January 3, 2017 will happen in forms of diminutive workshops during the event.

Unlike other crafts fairs where readymade products are available for sale, Dastkari Haat sets itself apart by offering a glimpse of the creative processes and live demonstrations of artworks by Iranian artists by giving visitors a chance to interact, learn, appreciate and explore Iranian handicrafts and textiles.

The bazaar will also have a myriad of cultural performances including a colourful spectacle of folk dancers from Rajasthan, Baul singers as well as Chaau performers from Bengal.

"The Samiti has constantly worked towards expanding opportunities for craftspeople as conservationists of Indian heritage. The Samiti's artisan-members have travelled all over and collaborated with local artisans in other developing nations to create utility-based and market-friendly products. We hope to build beautiful relationships through the interaction with Iranian craftsmen as well," said Jaya Jaitly, President of the Dastkari Haat Samiti.

The event is set to continue till January 15, 2017.
