
Triumph Motorcycles India has expanded the line of 400 cc bikes sold in the Indian market with the launch of the Thruxton 400. This motorcycle is placed right below the Scrambler 400 XC and above the Scrambler 400 X in the automaker's lineup. While it shares similarities with the Speed 400, multiple unique qualities set it apart. Here we take a look at all these major differences between the two.
Triumph Thruxton 400 vs Speed 400: Design
Both motorcycles have major differences in terms of design. To begin with, the Thruxton 400 comes with a semi-fairing with a circular headlamp. Along with it, the bike gets a different design for the fuel tank with indents on the side instead of a more spherical design. However, it has the same capacity with 13 litres of capacity. To separate it from the Speed 400, it also gets bar-end mirrors, clip-on handlebars, and dark USD forks instead of gold. There is also an option of a cowl instead of a pillion.

Triumph Thruxton 400 vs Speed 400: Dimensions
In terms of dimensions, the Thruxton and Speed have some slight differences. The Thruxton features a ground clearance of 158 mm, which is 6 mm lower than that of the Speed 400. A modification in the steering geometry has led to a 10 mm reduction in the wheelbase, bringing it to 1376 mm. When it comes to weight, the Thruxton 400 is marginally heavier, weighing in at 183 kg (kerb), which is 4 kilos more than the Speed 400.

While the primary frame remains unchanged, the Thruxton's underpinnings have been modified to align with its unique character. To begin with, the rear sub-frame has been altered. Both the front upside-down forks and rear mono-shock handle suspension tasks, but the Thruxton provides an additional 10 mm of travel at both ends.
Both models are equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels; however, the Speed 400 features Vredestein tires, whereas the Thruxton is fitted with Apollo Alpha H1. The tire profiles also differ, with the Thruxton offering a 110/70 front and 150/60 rear, while the Speed has 110/80 (front) and 150/70 (rear).

Powering the Triumph Thruxton 400 is the same 398 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine used on the Speed 400, which produces the same torque on both bikes at 37.5 Nm at 7,500 rpm. However, the power output is higher for the Thruxton at 41.4 hp compared to the Speed 400's 39 hp. This increases the top speed of the cafe racer and acceleration from 0-100 kmph is rated at 6.7 seconds, making it a second faster.

The Triumph Speed 400 is the second most affordable of the range at 2.50 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Thruxton 400 is the second most expensive of the range at 2.74 lakh (ex-showroom).
