- I'm sure the attempt wasn't to trivialise important issue of women's security so I hope dad apologises for the misplaced attempt at humour.
Omar Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah's son and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister (On Twitter)
- After the Supreme Court panel's findings in Justice Ganguly's case, Farooq has felt a need to intimidate and scare all women. It is unconstitutional and misogynistic. He is saying that there is no difference in speaking to a woman and sexual harassment. Mr Abdullah's party should ask him to retire and he should not be seen in public life.
Kavita Krishnan, Secretary, All India Progressive Women's Association (AIPWA)
- Mr Abdullah has made a profession out of taking everything very lightly. He took everything in Kashmir lightly and it became a total mess. His ministry is a total mess. The only pictures you see of him is dancing or going abroad. That's what happens when you take things lightly.
Maneka Gandhi, BJP MP
- Dr Abdullah, what have you gone and said! Expect more sensitivity from a senior public figure. And the father of a daughter.
Derek O'Brien, Trinamool Congress leader (On Twitter)
- When men say they are afraid of hiring or talking to women as Farooq Abdullah did. They are visibly a victim of their own insecurity!
Kiran Bedi, former IPS officer (On Twiter)
- It is a shocking statement. It is a very inappropriate statement to be given on the steps of Parliament.
Smriti Irani, BJP leader
- I cannot imagine him making a statement that would be detrimental.
Ambika Soni, Congress MP
