Obese Cop, Mocked By Shobhaa De, Offered Medical Help By Mumbai Hospital

Daulatram Jogawat was offered free medical treatment by many doctors following Shobhaa De's tweet.

Mumbai: Policeman Daulatram Jogawat, fat-shamed in author Shobhaa De's tweet last week, is at a hospital in Mumbai to explore treatment for obesity. The Madhya Pradesh inspector went through a series of tests on Monday at the Saifee hospital, which specialises in bariatric or fat-reducing surgery.

"He is undergoing tests which will help us determine the diseases he suffers from and if bariatric surgery can help him. We will be soon reviewing his reports and post that we will be able to decide on a future course of action," said Muffazal Lakdawala, chairman of Institute of Minimal Access Surgical Sciences and Research Centre, said.

"My team and I will ensure that the best medical treatment is given to him and hope that he should be on the road to recovery very soon," Dr Lakdawala promised.

Ms De had tweeted the policeman's image in a cheeky comment last week on security arrangements for the Mumbai civic polls.
She would realise later that Mr Jogawat was not really a Mumbai policeman.

As her tweet went viral, Ms De was trolled by critics for humiliating the policeman. She tackled the criticism with another tweet.
Mr Jogawat had said he was hurt, and that he was not obese because of overeating.

"I am hurt with Shobhaa De's tweet poking fun at me. I have put on weight due to hormonal disorder following my gall bladder operation in 1993," the inspector, who weighs around 180 kg, had told the Press Trust of India.

The upside of the story, for him, was that he received offers from several hospitals for free treatment.

Dr Lakdawala, who has several famous patients, was among those who reached out to him.

The obesity surgeon told reporters that "as a doctor, I feel that it is my duty to help a patient in need,
especially if it can improve his health and save his life."

He added, "When I heard about Daulatram Jogawat's condition I felt I could help him get his life back on track and hence reached out to him." The doctor also spoke to Mr Jogawat's seniors to enable his trip to Mumbai.
