Mayawati Dares BJP To Hold Polls Using Ballot Papers

Ms Mayawati had said that BSP will move court against the alleged EVM tampering.

New Delhi: "If your conscience is so clear, why not call for elections (again) using paper ballot,". That was  Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati's message to the BJP in the Rajya Sabha, re-iterating her allegation that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were tampered with in the just concluded Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

Ms Mayawati was undeterred as the members from the treasury benches opposed and shouted against her.

When Congress was in power, senior BJP leaders had expressed apprehensions on the use of EVMs saying free and fair elections cannot happen using the EVMs, she said in Rajya Sabha today.

On Monday, Ms Mayawati said that her party will move court against the alleged tampering. The Election Commission of India (ECI) had rejected her claim that the voting machines were rigged and said her demand for a re-poll using ballot papers was legally untenable.

The former Chief Minister of UP who won just 19 seats in the 403-member House in her state said the results were "not a verdict of people but a verdict of EVMs." She said her party has given a notice under rule 267 seeking suspension of business to take up the issue.

She demanded that a law be brought in the on-going budget session of the Parliament to scrap the use of EVMs in future elections.

Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien said he would not allow the notice as a short duration discussion on electoral reforms is scheduled tomorrow and these points could be raised then. Ms Mayawati, however, persisted with her point for some time but took her seat after Mr Kurien insisted on not allowing her notice.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal too had claimed that EVMs were tampered with in Punjab to keep the Aam Aadmi Party out of power.
