Classroom In Uttar Pradesh School Turned into Toilet For Official's Visit

The transformation took place during state Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan's overnight visit to Paduyee village of Banda.

Paduyee, Uttar Pradesh: In the middle of winter, a dozen children at a school in a village of Uttar Pradesh had to study out of doors, for their class room had been turned into a toilet for some government officials.

The transformation took place during state Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan's overnight visit to Paduyee village of Banda. A class room and the adjoining balcony of the local government school were walled off and a geyser and a western commode were installed.

An administration official said the matter was urgent. The chief secretary, he said, had some health issues, including a pain in knee joints, and needed a western style toilet.

The village did not have such a toilet, which is not a luxury but a "basic necessity", the official said.

This is, however, a temporary arrangement and the classes will soon be conducted indoors, said the official.

Building toilets in village home has become part of public discourse following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Clean India campaign.
