Burns to visit India; to discuss terrorism

New Delhi:

US Under Secretary for Political Affairs William Burns will pay a three-day official visit to New Delhi from June 10 to review the Indo-US bilateral ties and the situation in Pakistan.

The visit was formally announced by the Ministry of External Affairs on Monday, which said it will provide an opportunity to "review and take forward the Indo-US partnership and exchange views on matters of mutual interest."

Burns, the first senior official of the Obama administration to come to India after the recent Lok Sabha polls, will call on External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and hold meetings with Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon and other senior government officials.

The visit comes ahead of the scheduled tour of India by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the third week of next month.

Sources indicated that India would point out to Burns that Pakistan was not doing enough to dismantle terror infrastructure which affects India.

New Delhi feels that Pakistan's war against Taliban has left untouched groups directly hurting India like Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed and this will be conveyed during the visits of both Burns and Clinton, the sources added.
