'Social Media Said Acche Din, Not BJP,' Says Union Minister Narendra Tomar, Then Clarifies

Union Steel and Mines Minister Narendra Singh Tomar

Indore: The BJP had never promised "Acche Din (good days)," it all started on social media, union minister Narendra Singh Tomar said on Monday before launching into an elaborate clarification.

"The BJP never said acche din aayenge (good days will come). It came on social media that acche din will come and Rahul Gandhi will have to go and people attributed it to the BJP. We accept it in all humility but it was never our slogan," Mr Tomar told reporters in Indore.

The Steel and Mines minister was responding to questions about spiraling onion prices belying the catchphrase made famous by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's campaign for last year's national election.

"Those who say "acche din" have not come," Mr Tomar continued, "should be more positive and understand that good times have already arrived in the country."

As TV channels zoomed in on the comments, the minister backtracked and said videos of his comments were being shown "selectively and that is not fair."

He said: "The BJP government and the Prime Minister are committed to acche din and are making all efforts for continuous betterment, as I said earlier."
