New Delhi: BSP parliamentarian Narender Kashyap was arrested on Thursday along with his wife and son, a day after his daughter-in-law Himanshi's mystery death at his home in Ghaziabad near Delhi.

Narender Kashyap and his older son Sagar were charged hours after Himanshi Kashyap was found dead in the bathroom, lying face down in blood. She had a bullet wound in the head.

Police say the weapon used was a licensed revolver belonging to her husband, which was found on a cupboard in the bedroom. The bathroom door was curiously locked from inside.

Himanshi's family alleges that she was tortured for dowry.

Narender Kashyap is a lawmaker of the BSP or Bahujan Samaj Party in the Rajya Sabha.

Sagar Kashyap, a student of microbiology, had left on Wednesday morning for his medical college in Meerut, his family said.

Seven people, including the lawmaker and his wife, were present in the house when Himanshi's body was found; no one admitted to hearing the gunshot, a police officer said.

Narendra Kashyap's family claimed they were on ground floor and Himanshi was on the first floor of the two-storey house. Her body was found around noon.

Of the two licensed weapons in the house, one belonged to Narendra Kashyap and the other was his son's. Both were usually kept locked in an almirah.

Himanshi and Sagar Kashyap were married three years ago. She was the daughter of a former minister in the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh. The couple has an 18-month-old daughter.

Himanshi's father has alleged that her husband's family constantly abused her over their demands for a car and Rs. 50 lakh cash in dowry.  "Even on Tuesday when I saw her, she had a black eye," he said.

Denying the charges, Narendra Kashyap said Himanshi was "like a daughter" to him.
