Mumbai: Mask reveals identity of thieves

Mumbai: The theft plan was perfect and the execution was impeccable. But there was one problem: the place of the crime was inappropriate.

Three women in burqa were arrested on Saturday for stealing jewellery from a shop, owned by a Suresh Kumar Kumavat, at Bhuleshwar. The police said that though the faces of the accused were covered, they were identified and caught because after the theft they were roaming about near the shop located in a Hindu area.

The police said the three women, along with two children, had gone to the shop in Sawariya building around 6.30pm on Saturday. After spending some time, they left abruptly without buying anything. A salesman, who became suspicious, checked the CCTV footage and learnt that they had stolen jewellery from the counter, the police said.

"The women acted very smartly. They thought that because they were wearing burqa, their faces would not be captured by the CCTV cameras of the shop. When they stepped out of the shop, they were probably the only ones wearing burqa. Rakesh, the salesman who was serving them, immediately ran out to look for the thieves and spotted them a few yards away," an officer from the LT Marg police station said. The stolen jewellery, which included two necklaces and 25 bangles, was recovered from them.

The three have been identified as Yasmin Gafoor Khan, 22, Muskan Shaikh Shabbir, 30, and Subiya Begum Shaikh Rehman, 19.

The officer said the CCTV footage revealed that two women had engaged Rakesh in a conversation, while the third one quietly kept a few pieces of jewellery in her purse.

"They were produced before the court and have been remanded in judicial custody," the officer said.
