After five months of investigating an alleged murder case in Mumbai without a body, the cops say it was the bloodstains at the scene of the crime, which helped them nab the alleged murderers.

The case involved the murder of Irshad Alam Ansari, who resided and worked at Kashimira Road, Bhayander in Mumbai.

The incident occurred on December 28, 2009, when Irshad was having dinner and drinks with his friends -- Anjum Patel, Santosh Rai, Virendra Sada and Raj Bangar, who are also the accused in the case.

"Irshad had a brawl with the accused men over the food bill and in a fit of rage slapped one of the accused Santosh Rai. An enraged Santosh went home and brought a revolver and, finding Irshad alone, shot at him, killing him instantaneously," said Police Inspector Anil Patil.

Realising what a colossal mistake he had committed, Santosh fled the scene of the crime. However, a frightened Bangar informed the police about the crime. "However, when we reached the scene of the crime, there was no body and only blood stains," said Patil.

The Kashimira policemen started investigations and on January 5, based on their investigation of the bloodstains, arrested Anjum. Police also traced Santosh's mobile and nabbed him from Delhi.

"Santosh fired a shot at Irshad and fled. But Anjum planned and disposed the body in the nearby jungle and then lodged a complaint with the police. They knew about the murder but did not cooperate with the police, fearing they will be caught after the brawl with Irshad that night," Patil said.

Santosh has been held for the murder, while Anjum and others have been arrested for conspiracy and for destroying evidence.
