With Doubts and Questions, Bangalore School Reopens After Alleged Assault of Student

The school has allegedly been operating some of its classes illegally.

Bangalore: The Bangalore school, where a nursery student was allegedly assaulted last week, has reopened after the Diwali holidays. Police have arrested a school attendant over the alleged assault.

But parents of the school students remain concerned about the safety of their children.
The mother of one of the students told NDTV, "There is a lot of worry in my mind. I need to go to work also. I need to send my daughter (to school) because of the exams. This is an unavoidable situation. I did not want to send her. I spent a sleepless night. The management has assured us about security. Hope this incident does not happen in any other school."

Along with the anxiety over the safety of their children, these parents are battling other concerns as well. The spotlight on the school, after the alleged assault, has reportedly revealed that it had been operating some of its classes illegally.

A Block Education Officer, who visited the school on Monday, said, "They say they have started the school. I am checking the permissions. As of now, it is illegal. It should be a Kannada medium school."

Angry parents demanded answers about the future of the school from the officer.

One of them told NDTV, "Yesterday, they sent a message that the school will reopen today and the police commissioner has given all the clearances. But today, we hear that the school does not have requisite permissions. So where do we stand now?"

Politicians have also been watching the case closely.

BJP leader Suresh Kumar, who met some parents today, told NDTV, "Police should deal with the sexual harassment case seriously. But that is a separate issue. This big institution is running without the necessary permission. The negligence of the education department should be investigated".

Though police personnel remain deployed outside the school gates, a real feeling of safety is clearly missing. As is any sense of certainty over the rest of this academic year.
