Seoul: Joint South Korean and US landing exercises on Mallipo beach were cancelled on Monday with military officials blaming bad weather for the cancellation.

In some cases, journalists were prevented from filming, and the full details behind the cancellation were unclear.

North Korea expressed renewed outrage over the Yellow Sea drills.

The war games are a "pretext for aggression and ignite a war at any cost," the National Peace Committee of Korea said in a statement carried on Sunday by the official Korean Central News Agency.

Barbed wire and metal staves ran the length of the beach for about two miles (3 kilometres). Military ships hovered in the distance. The aluminium road laid on Sunday to prepare for the amphibious landing drill was cleared away.

The joint military exercises will take place over four days, but no live-fire drills are planned, said Commander Jeff Davis, spokesman for the 7th Fleet in Japan.
