New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday greeted people on the eve of Raksha Bandhan and said "May the festival be an occasion for re-dedication to the well being of women, particularly the girl child."

In his message, Mr Mukherjee extended his warm greetings and good wishes to all citizens in Delhi and abroad, and said: "The festival of Rakhi spreads harmony and celebrates brotherhood. Rakhi is a sacred thread of protection embellished with the affection of a sister for her brother. It symbolises the inseparable bond of love between brothers and sisters".

He said that the gesture is "not a mere ritual", but a "powerful act that obligates everyone to ensure the safety and security of women".

Mr Modi said: "Tomorrow the whole country will celebrate the festival of Raksha Bandhan. On this auspicious occasion of rakhi, I extend warm wishes to the people of the country."
