US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked General Randy George, the Chief of Staff of the Army, to immediately step down from his position, marking another high-profile change in the American armed forces.

The government thanked him for his decades of service to the nation, Pentagon chief spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed on X.

Gen. Christopher LaNeve, the current vice chief of staff of the Army and Hegseth's former military aide, will be the acting Army chief of staff.

Who Is General Randy George?

A graduate of West Point Military Academy, George was commissioned as an infantry officer at the start of his career. He served in several conflicts, including the first Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan. George commanded company, battalion, brigade, division, and corps levels throughout his career.

He studied at the Colorado School of Mines, where he earned a Master of Science in Economics. He is married to his West Point classmate, Patty, and they have two children.

General Randy George also worked as the 38th Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, his biography on the Army's website stated. He served in key positions during the Biden administration, including as then Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's top military aide from 2021 to 2022.

George was appointed as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army on September 21, 2023. Since a chief of staff usually holds their position for four years, his term would have ended in 2027, CBS reported.

The veteran military officer had survived the initial round of firings last February, wherein top military leaders were removed by Hegseth, including the Navy's top uniformed officer, Adm. Lisa Franchetti, and Gen. Jim Silfe, the Air Force vice-chief of staff. US President Donald Trump also fired then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Charles "C.Q." Brown, at the same time.

George's exit could potentially lead to more conflict between Hegseth and the army leadership. The Defense Secretary, who has dismissed over a dozen high-ranking officers since he assumed his duties, has been mired in several scandals, including mishandling classified military intelligence, The Guardian reported.

Apart from George, two other Army officers were removed from their roles, as per a CBS report - Maj. Gen. William Green, the head of the Army's Chaplain Corps, and Gen. David Hodne, who led the Army's Transformation and Training Command.
