Naypyidaw, Myanmar: Aung San Suu Kyi made her historic debut in Myanmar's fledgling parliament on Monday as the opposition leader and her party transform from dissident outsiders to mainstream politicians.

"I will try my best for the country," Suu Kyi told AFP as she arrived at the parliament in the capital Naypyidaw to take her seat as an elected MP for the first time.

The 67-year-old, one of the National League for Democracy's 37 lower house members of parliament, postponed her debut in the fledgling legislature last week to recover from a gruelling European tour and visit her constituency.

Parliament, still overwhelmingly led by the military and its political allies, has a number of pressing issues on the table, including economic reforms and recent communal violence in the west of the country.
