PM, Obama charm each other

London:

There was some tough talk from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his first meeting with America's new President.

"We have always said that we are willing to discuss all outstanding issues. But let me say that these relations, these discussions cannot proceed if hundreds of people, as happened in Mumbai, are being killed and therefore Pakistan has to ensure to the world that its absolutely sincere  in its statements that territory of Pakistan won't be used for terror acts directed against India. This is a minimum for any discussions between India and Pakistan."

Last week, as President Barack Obama unveiled a new strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, he had suggested that resuming the Indo-Pak peace process would help the region focus more effectively on the fight against the Taliban as well.

"We did discuss the issue of terrorism and we didn't discuss in the context of terror emanating from Pakistan but we're extremely concerned about extremists along the border of Af-Pak we spoke about how we can cooperate effectively on issues of counter terrorism," the US President said.

But it wasn't all business between the 2 leaders.

For all the tough talking, the Obama phenomenon seems to have affected the Prime Minister as well.

"Daughter asked that I get his autograph. She'll cherish all her life," said Manmohan Singh.

And the ice breaker photo opportunity turned into a mutual admiration opportunity, as President Obama declared Manmohan Singh as the man who drove India's economic growth.

It was a short meeting and the last among the five leaders Obama met on the sidelines of the G20 summit. But it more than made up by its warmth. It would be the perfect note for the Indian delegation to end this summit on.
