Myanmar Reports Largest Heroin Bust of Year

Yangon: Myanmar's drug squad has seized more than 140 kilograms of heroin at a town near the Thai border in the country's largest bust this year.

State-owned Kyemone daily newspaper reported Thursday that an anti-drug squad seized 404 heroin blocks worth $2.3 million and arrested two suspects in the Shan state border town of Tachileik.

It said the officers also found rifles, ammunition and other weapons in the car.

The paper said both the driver and passenger will face drug charges.

Myanmar is the world's second-largest producer of opium, the main ingredient in heroin, after Afghanistan, accounting for about 25 percent of global poppy production.
