Braslia, Brazil: The largest political party in Brazil, the PMDB, gave itself 30 days Saturday to decide whether to break with embattled President Dilma Rousseff's coalition.

Lawmaker Osmar Terra, a member of the powerful Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB), said the decision had been taken at the centrist party's national convention in Brasilia.

"The government has made bad decisions. It is sinking. The PMDB cannot sink with it. We have set a period of 30 days to find the best exit, but the exit has to happen as soon as possible," said Terra, one of the leaders of the movement to break with Rousseff and the ruling Workers' Party (PT).

"The PT and the government are over. Dilma has lost control of the country. Nobody believes what she says, she can't unite anyone or find a way forward for the economy," he told AFP.

The PMDB, a huge centrist party, is seen as a kingmaker in Brazil.

It has been a major player in every recent administration, regardless of the president's political leaning.

Calls within the party to abandon the coalition have been growing as Rousseff faces an impeachment drive, a bruising recession, a spiraling corruption scandal and a probe of alleged electoral violations.
