Sharif Osman Hadi was a leader of the student group Inqilab Mancha. Inqilab Mancha distanced itself from the violence that erupted at the Dhaka protests, blaming opportunists for trying to derail the demonstrations.

In a statement posted on social media, the group said, "They essentially want to turn Bangladesh into a dysfunctional state through vandalism and arson. They want to endanger the independence and sovereignty of this country."

Members of the Youth TIPRA Federation protested in front of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, condemning divisive and derogatory remarks alleged made by Bangladeshi leaders about the Seven Sisters of North East India. Raising slogans and displaying placards, the protesters expressed strong resentment over statements they said hurt the sentiments and dignity of the people of the region. The protest concluded peacefully under tight security arrangements. 

The interim government in Bangladesh, which is led by Muhammad Yunus, has been grappling with protests over delayed reforms, and warnings of unrest by ousted leader Sheikh Hasina's party the Awami League, which has been barred from the vote. Elections in the country are scheduled for February 12. 

Four people, including two police officers, were injured after violence erupted outside the Indian Assistant High Commission in Chittagong. According to the police, the protesters gathered outside the Indian mission’s office in the Khulshi area of Chittagong hurled bricks, vandalising the office premises in the early hours of Friday.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasib Aziz said that a police intervention resulted in a chase and counter-chase between law enforcement officers and protesters.

Aziz added that the police detained people at the scene, who are expected to be booked under the Anti-Terrorism Act. 

Three leading media houses in Bangladesh- The Daily Star, Prothom Alo, and The Business Standard, will not be printing their Friday edition amid the unrest in Bangladesh. The protesters had vandalised the offices of The Daily Star and Prothom Alo.

In a statement, Prothom Alo said, "As the office of Prothom Alo was subjected to massive attacks, vandalism and arson last night, it was not possible to continue its normal operations. Therefore, the printed version of Prothom Alo could not be published today. Its online portal is also temporarily closed."

"We express our sincere apologies to our readers for this. We will restore the damaged technical system as soon as possible and resume publication of Prothom Alo online and in the newspaper. We seek the cooperation of our readers in this regard," the publication added.

Though the office of The Business Standard was not attacked, the media house said it would not be printing the Friday edition as the press was shut down due to security concerns. 

The body of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi will be brought back to Bangladesh on Friday evening, according to reports. 

Several protesters were seen blocking roads in Dhaka's Shahbagh area on Friday, following the violence that unfolded after the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. According to a report by BBC News Bangla, around 200 protesters were seen blocking the roads in Shahbagh. 

Massive has been deployed outside the Indian Assistant high Commission in Bangladesh's Chittagong. The army has been deployed outside the premises. Earlier, a group of protesters staged a sit-in outside the Commission following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. The protesters gathered outside the commission's office at around 11 pm local time on Thursday.

Nurul Kabir, the editor of Bangladesh's New Age Newspaper, was attacked by mobs on Thursday. A video showed protestors pulling his Kabir's hair, and slapping him.

The ancestral house of Bangladesh's founding president Mujibur Rahman was vandalised again. This location was attacked at least three times before and completely gutted and ransacked. There have also been reports of attack on Awami League offices across Bangladesh.

The latest unrest in Bangladesh happened following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi on Thursday. Last week, Hadi was shot by masked assailants in Dhaka. He was first taken to a local hospital and then airlifted to Singapore, where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.

Hadi had been a key figure in the 2024 uprising that ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. He was a candidate in the upcoming elections in the country. He was known for his anti-India rhetoric. 

The Indian High Commission in Bangladesh issued an advisory late Thursday, urging Indian community members and Indian students residing in Bangladesh to avoid local travel and minimise movement outside their living premises.

Police moved quickly to the scene after learning of the sit-in. 

The Muhammad Yunus-led interim government in Bangladesh has declared Saturday a day of state mourning in honour of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, with national flags to be flown at half-mast and special prayers planned across the country. 

The protesters in Bangladesh vandalised the offices of the country's biggest media houses- the Daily Star and Prothom Alo. A fire broke out at the office of Daily Star. Speaking to the news agency AFP, a journalist with the Daily Star said, "I can't breathe anymore. There's too much smoke. I am inside. You are killing me." The fire at the Daily Star building was brought under control at 1:40 am local time on Thursday firefighting officials said. Read more

The Bangladesh Police have launched a manhunt for the masked assailants who killed student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. The police released photographs of two key suspects and offering a reward of five million taka (about $42,000) for information leading to their arrest.

Reacting to Hadi's death, Bangladesh's interim leader Muhammad Yunus said, "His passing represents an irreplaceable loss to the nation's political and democratic sphere." Yunus ensured a transparent investigation into Hadi's death and urged citizens to remain calm. 

In Dhaka, videos circulating on social media showed mobs vandalising the offices of Bangladesh's largest daily newspaper, Prothom Alo, as well as the Daily Star.

Hadi, a student leader during last year's uprising that overthrew the Sheikh Hasina government, was shot in the head by masked assailants last Friday as he launched his election campaign in Dhaka. He died late Thursday after being flown to Singapore for treatment. 

Bangladesh has been rocked by violent protests since late Thursday after the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, with concerns of further unrest ahead of national elections in the country.
