Archie's Riverdale gets its first gay character

Archie's Riverdale gets its first gay character
New Delhi: Meet Kevin Keller. The new hunk in Riverdale town is not vying with Archie and Reggie for Veronica's affections. He is not even chasing homely Betty. But Jughead, could be quite another matter.

For Kevin Keller is the first openly gay character in the 69-year history of Archie Comics.

Keller is introduced by Veronica in issue NO. 202, titled "Isn't it Bromantic?" A first look at the issue shows Kevin telling Jughead that he is not interested in Veronica. And he explains why.

''It was high time they added a gay character to Riverdale," says Jon Goldwater, Co-CEO, Archie Comics. He says, "the addition is also a way of making the comic more inclusive. Archie's hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character there."

The announcement comes a year after Archie pondered deeply and walked into the future to decide on whom to marry - raven-haired Veronica Lodge or next-door girl Betty Cooper. In this edition, Veronica will be seen pursuing Kevin.

The Archie canon appears to be realising the need for a rehaul, one that includes different orientations and even different ethnicities.

Recently an Indian character, Raj Patel, complete with father Ravi, mother Mona and sister Tina were also introduced. As the Archie universe expands, fans can look forward to the next recruit. Almost as much as Veronica would be.
