Polluted air is creating a health emergency. According to a University of Chicago study, annual particulate pollution in India has increased 15% since 1998. Nearly 40% of population is exposed to pollution levels not seen in any other nation. If pollution levels persist in India, 510 million North Indians are on track to lose 8.5 years of life expectancy. Lucknow residents stand to lose 11.1 years of life expectancy. If WHO guideline is met, Delhi residents may see up to 10 years added to their lives. India needs to improve emissions monitoring, provide regulators with real-time data and provide the public with information about polluters. We decode the severity of India's Air Emergency and ask experts about the rectifying measures that need to be taken.
