Nepal Gen Z Protests | What Is Behind The 'Gen Z' Protests In Nepal - Social Media Ban Or More?

Nepal has been rocked by widespread youth-led protests after the government banned 26 major social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, and X, citing their refusal to register with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. On Monday, thousands of protesters, including many school and college students under the banner of 'Gen Z', rallied outside Parliament in Kathmandu, demanding that the ban be revoked. 19 people died and hundreds were injured after police opened fire and used water cannons and tear gas on the protesters. Facing nationwide outrage, the country’s Home Minister resigned, and the government lifted the ban on social media sites. The Nepali Army has since been deployed in the capital to maintain order.
