Communal tension has flared in Nepal's Parsa and Dhanusha Dham districts, near the Indian border, triggering a high-security alert. Amid a deteriorating security situation, India has completely sealed its borders, restricting all cross-border movements, barring emergency services. Protests erupted in Parsa after a video with alleged religious content went viral on social media. Demonstrations soon turned violent as tension flared across two places in southern Nepal. Police lobbed tear gas shells to contain the situation in Birgunj town of Parsa district, bordering Raxaul in India, where demonstrations were held to protest the vandalisation of a mosque in Dhanusha district.
