Madagascar News | Protests Erupt In Madagascar's After President Dissolves Parliament

Madagascan President Andry Rajoelina dissolved the lower house of parliament on Tuesday, deepening the political crisis after a military rebellion forced him to flee and go into hiding. His whereabouts remain unknown after an elite military unit, CAPSAT, joined youth-led protests calling for him to step down in an apparent coup attempt. The protests, led by Gen Z, initially erupted over electricity and water outages but have expanded to include poverty, cost of living, education access, and alleged corruption. Thousands of protesters packed Antananarivo’s main square on Tuesday, demanding Rajoelina’s resignation. CAPSAT, the same unit that helped Rajoelina come to power in 2009, now claims to control Madagascar's armed forces. New military and gendarmerie heads have been appointed.
