Marina Development Plan Sparks Concerns Among Chennai Fisherfolk
The proposed development near Chennai’s Marina shores has sparked concerns among fisherfolk over housing, livelihoods and the impact on the coastal environment. Fishing communities are seeking long-term housing assurances and raising questions over possible displacement, increased policing, new roads and greater commercialisation of coastal land. They have also voiced concerns about rising sea levels and the potential impact of construction and night-time lighting on Olive Ridley turtle nesting along Chennai’s beaches.
