Israelis across the land stood still on Wednesday (October 7) morning at 6:29 a.m. (0329 GMT) to mark the exact time Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggering a military assault that destroyed much of Gaza, where conditions remain dire despite a year-old ceasefire that is meant to halt the war for good. Israeli residents of Kibbutz Kfar Aza, one of the many communities hit hard on October 7, held a vigil and lowered the Israeli flag to half mast, while other visited the Nova music festival near the Gaza border, where 348 young people were killed by militants during the attack. Head of the Kibbutz Kfar Aza community, Zion Regev said this was the first year the community was holding events in the Kibbutz since 2023, and that it was a very emotional day for the residents. During the rest of the day, various events will be held commemorating the anniversary, including the main one at Hostage Square in Tel Aviv. The anniversary is the first for Israelis without any hostages still held in Gaza, with those dead and alive exchanged in swaps with Hamas for Palestinians held in Israeli jails. The remains of the last Israeli hostage were recovered in January. It also comes just 20 days ahead of Israel's first election since the attack, a vote that is viewed as a referendum on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's long tenure in power.
