Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar will receive Israel’s Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism for his bravery during an attack inside a Flydubai aircraft’s cockpit. Seriously injured after being struck with a crash axe by his co-pilot, Omani national Hammam Al-Hammami, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing Israeli passengers to overpower the attacker and avert a potential catastrophe. Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced that the award will be presented once the captain recovers. Machchhar is currently recuperating in a UAE hospital.
