Assam is all set to unveil one of its most ambitious urban beautification projects as Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to inaugurate the Guwahati Riverfront Development Project and the Gateway of Guwahati Inland Water Terminal today. These two projects, worth over ₹327 crore under the Smart City Mission, aim to transform the Brahmaputra riverbank into a major tourism and cultural destination, drawing inspiration from Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront and Mumbai’s Gateway of India. The newly developed 1.2 km-long Guwahati Riverfront features: * Seven decorative gateways showcasing Assam’s cultural heritage * Musical installations, open recreational zones, and walking plazas * A large, landscaped riverside park * Parking facilities, public utility zones, and viewing decks * Spaces for cultural exhibitions and public gatherings Officials say the riverfront has been designed to reflect Assam’s identity, incorporating indigenous musical instruments, traditional motifs, and historical elements. The Gateway Inland Water Terminal, developed alongside the riverfront, will serve as a boarding point for: * Evening river cruises * Tourist cruises under the Sagarmala tourism circuit * Future Brahmaputra-linked cruise routes connecting Raj Bhavan and other historic sites
