Gujarat's Land Wars
Gujarat's Dalits are on the warpath. For the last two months, protesters through rallies and dharnas have been demanding land allotted to them under the Agricultural Land Ceiling Act. The land continues to be cultivated mostly by the upper caste, while Dalits skin carcasses, and work as labourers and manual scavengers. This week, India Matters reports on the growing conviction amongst Dalits in Gujarat villages that ownership of land is the only way forward.
