Garbage Avalanche At Indonesia's Largest Landfill Kills 5

At least five people have died after a massive garbage avalanche struck the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Facility in Bekasi near Jakarta, Indonesia. Officials say the collapse was triggered by heavy overnight rain, causing a huge section of the landfill to slide and bury people who were working or resting nearby. More than 300 rescuers are searching the unstable waste heaps using heavy machinery and sniffer dogs to locate missing people. The disaster has renewed concerns over safety and capacity at the sprawling landfill, which handles much of the capital region’s daily waste.
