PM Modi today broke his silence on the fuel prices in the country - and in a pointed attack said 8 of 10 states with highest fuel prices are non-BJP states. Further, he questioned these states on why when the centre cut tax on fuel in November 2021, opposition states did not. The opposition says that it is unfair to pass the buck onto the states, when, in fact, it is the central excise duty on fuel that has gone up in the last 10 years - also, the break-down of the tax component clearly shows that central govt levies the bulk of tax around 63% and states, the around 37%. So, who is 'shedding the crocodile tears', as the PM says? More importantly, is there any relief in sight for the common man?
