The Bombay High Court on Tuesday took strong exception to criticism by BJP leaders over a video featuring actor Dia Mirza, in which she urged citizens to refrain from bursting firecrackers on public streets in compliance with the court's directions. The video, released as part of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) eco-friendly Diwali campaign, was aimed at raising awareness about environmental protection and public health.
However, after the opposition by BJP leaders, the video was pulled down from the BMC's social media handle.
Bench of Justice Girish Kulkarni & Justice Dr Neela Gokhale pulled up political leaders for targeting actor Dia Mirza and giving a communal colour to public health and environmental concerns. The bench said "they are disturbed by the stray comments made by some politicians" and reminded them that "India is a Secular country."
