The police lathi-charged protesters and fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters. The Sandeshkhali incident, where women have accused sexual harassment by aides of Sheikh Shahjahan, a local strongman, has led to a political war of words between the BJP and TMC. The area outside the Basirhat SP office saw stone pelting and tear gas shells being fired along with lathicharge to bring the situation under control. The BJP has accused TMC supporters of stone pelting. But videos of the incident show stone pelting by the protesters.
